Pet Fashion: The Pre-Westminster Fashion Show for Dogs

You’ve probably heard of the famous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, but did you know about the pre-show? This famous gala is called the Pre-Westminster Fashion Show for Dogs and helps raise money for Animal Care & Control of NYC, the largest pet organization in the northeast. This year marked the 4th annual show.

This year’s party was a Venetian Masquerade themed fashion show held in the ballroom of the historic Hotel Pennsylvania. Dog owners and their paw pals from around the world arrived in elaborate outfits including tuxes, feather boas, cocktail dresses, and full on bridal gowns that showcased their distinct personalities.

Not only did these fashionable dogs walk the red carpet for their photo ops, they also walked the catwalk with their owners. Some of the dogs that walked the runway were up for adoption, allowing them great exposure for finding loving homes.

Malachy the Pekingese wasn’t the only one to be crowned with top honors. The pre-show had its own set of awards to hand out, including Best Dressed in Show, awarded to Boo who was wearing a black mask with outfit and wings. The design was created by Roberto Negrin, who was honored as Pet Fashion Designer of 2012. Dogs were acknowledged for their personality, performance work, and merit for charitable work they have accomplished. A Miss Congeniality award was also given out to the most popular dog.

After the awards were handed out, there was a special “Puptual Ceremony.” During this time four dog couples exchanged Neri Jewel charm chains and were wed! The jewels were blue for the boys and pink for the girls. Each had half a split heart reading “You” for one and “Me” for the other.

The event is rumored to have raised around $20,000 for animal shelters! Check out the fabulous video to see many of the dogs who attended and their outfits. How many of you would like to attend next year? For more pictures and videos, visit their official Facebook page.
